About this document
A US Army plan to place a mobile nuclear missile network in tunnels cut beneath the Greenland ice cap. Camp Century, built in 1959 and powered by a portable nuclear reactor, was the proof of concept: a working installation under the ice, with housing, a theatre and a library, that the plan was meant to scale from.
The camp was. The missile network was not: the ice sheet moves, and the tunnels it deforms cannot hold a launch site. Camp Century closed in 1966 and the reactor was removed. What stayed behind in the ice is the reason the project is argued about now.
